Madrid, September 22 (EFE) .- Madrid wants to promote cultural tourism in the capital through one of its major attractions in this segment, the theater.

For this the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, accompanied by the delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Andrea Levy, the delegate for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, and the president of the Association of Producers and Theaters of Madrid (Aptem ), Jesús Cimarro, presented the campaign ‘Come to the theater, experience Madrid’ this afternoon in the Plaza del Callao.

This promotional initiative, born last year to contribute to the recovery of the Madrid theater scene, now returns to continue to encourage this sector and the arrival of new visitors attracted by what will be a “historic” theater season.

The mayor, accompanied by Madrid producers and actors such as Josema Yuste, Santiago Urrialde, Luis Piedrahita, Magüi Mira or Natalia Millán, among others, assured in the presentation that “Madrid cannot be understood without our performing arts, without our theater”. and he expressed “infinite gratitude” to all the actors, “those who are on the tables, in the offices, in the sets, in the changing rooms, to all those in charge of the function performed”, underlines the Consistory in a press release.

Martínez-Almeida explained the value of this industry for the city of Madrid. “Thanks to the great world of theater, Madrid is a leading city in the world”, and he recalled that “we are the fifth world capital of theater, the first capital of the world of musicals in Spanish and only for this whole season we will do it twice as much. number of musicals in the city of Madrid compared to 2019 “.

After considering that “we cannot understand Madrid without culture, as culture is the air we breathe in this city and which allows us to continue day after day”, the councilor encouraged people to attend “any of the wonderful theatrical productions. or musical that we have in our city.

The City Council, through the Delegated Tourism Area and in collaboration with Aptem, promotes this campaign that highlights the great theatrical agenda of the capital, full of unique proposals that can only be experienced in Madrid.

In this 22/23 season the city has “the best theatrical offer in its history”, all kinds of productions, 13 large-format musicals and hundreds of stage titles, which reinforce the image of Madrid as a tourist, cultural and recreational. entertainment and musical capital of the world in Spanish.

The “Come to the theater, experience Madrid” campaign will run until November 1 in the Madrid region and in the cities of Barcelona, ​​Valencia and Seville, three of its main national tourist resorts.

According to Aptem, the six big musicals on the bill in 2019, the year before the pandemic, had a total of 1.6 million spectators, which means a turnover of 109.7 million euros.

In season 22/23, the Madrid stage agenda will be full of major theatrical events and shows, with musicals as one of its main attractions, thanks to new or upcoming productions, such as’Malinche ‘Singing in the rain ‘Matilde ‘ or ‘The Neverending Story’; others consolidated as’The Lion King’, with more than a decade of experience in the city; and those that are yet to come, like the first of ‘Aladdin’ in 2023, among others.
